Islands Reflections: Connections That Come Full Circle

Islands Reflections highlights the special memories and stories from our Islands Hospice O‘ahu and Maui teams, showcasing the meaningful moments that define our work. For seven years, Tehani B. has been an essential part of our O‘ahu team as a community liaison, meeting with patients and families to explain hospice services. She also works closely with healthcare providers to ensure a smooth transition to hospice care. One recent experience stood out, highlighting the deep, often unexpected connections between our staff and patients.

A Memorable Encounter

Tehani was contacted by a former referral source who had since moved after selling her caregiving agency. Despite the distance, this individual reached out to Tehani for help with her hānai mother who still lived on the island. During her meeting with the patient and family the next day, Tehani realized they had crossed paths many years before.

“Through our discussion, we made some mutual connections and found out that she was my chaplain in elementary school,” said Tehani. “We have worked together in a different capacity 25 years ago!”

For Tehani, experiences like this underscore the importance of human connection, both professionally and personally. Helping families navigate challenging conversations about end-of-life care is where she finds her purpose.

“This is one of many experiences where the connections I make to these patients are much larger than the one-hour meeting I have with them,” said Tehani. “In some way or another, we are all connected, and to be able to give back to those who have poured into me is immeasurably satisfying.”

Staying Motivated

When things get hectic, Tehani finds strength in knowing her work makes a difference. Her story shows how, in unexpected moments, the world can feel connected, and the relationships we build can have a lasting impact. For Tehani, these connections fuel her passion for providing compassionate care to every family she serves.

“Remembering these instances are my ‘why,’” said Tehani. “I truly believe my purpose is to help families have these difficult conversations about end-of-life while also recognizing their individuality and personal life experiences."
