Mother’s Day is a chance to celebrate moms and mother figures everywhere, but for those who have lost a parent, the day can trigger painful feelings of loss and sadness.
Mother’s Day is a chance to celebrate moms and mother figures everywhere, but for those who have lost a parent, the day can trigger painful feelings of loss and sadness. The day can be difficult for anyone mourning the loss of a mom, no matter how much time has passed. If your mother is no longer with you, there are still several ways to remember and honor her on this day.
Ways to honor mom this Mother’s Day
- Gather your loved ones and friends and talk about special memories you have. Talking about her life and legacy can help to lift spirits.
- Celebrate the mother figures in your life. While no one can replace your mom, taking the time to reach out to the aunties, grandmas, and mother figures to show appreciation is beautiful gestures of aloha.
- Do something that reminds you of her. If your mother loved gardening, plant a seed. If she liked a certain food or drink, have a toast in her name. If you’re a mom, bring your kids in on the tradition and celebrate a life well lived, together.
- Give yourself permission to grieve. Each person has different ways of grieving, but take time to relax and listen to your heart. You don’t have to hold back feelings of sadness. Tears of sorrow can release stress and sleep can help you reset and recharge.
