Volunteer Spotlight
Our Healing Through Remembrance special on KHON in May caught the attention of Raynette Akau.
It inspired her to use her free time to become an Islands Hospice volunteer. Ever since the broadcast, Raynette started volunteering with us twice a week. She visits clients and also helps with flower arrangements and deliveries. Typically, Raynette sees two to three clients per shift, offering them companionship and her full attention by talking story and ensuring their needs are being met.
One of her special memories from volunteering with Islands Hospice involves a sweet elderly couple and their loving sons. “It was evident that their sons took excellent care of their aging parents. The Mr. is 100 years young, fragile, has a sweet disposition, is highly aware, understands and responds,” Raynette explained. “The Mrs. is in her 90s, self-sufficient, friendly, crochets, and they have high regard for their caregivers.”
Raynette is happily retired and is living life to the fullest. When she is not volunteering with Islands Hospice, she likes to watch K-Dramas and travel. Islands Hospice is grateful that she decided to tune in to our special broadcast and was inspired to give back to her community by volunteering with us. Mahalo, Raynette!
